CINES is a great French leader in the field of long-term preservation of electronic documents.
Nowadays the information in digital form is pervasive in large quantities in multiple formats. It is part of the heritage of the « computer generation ».
Like any patrimony the issue of conservation arises, but with more acute given the significant masses of data concerned that require very large storage volumes and robust metadata.
In 2006 the Ministry has designated CINES as national archiving site of digital French theses and recently the archival mission is included in the statutes of CINES.
CINES has implemented and developed a platform (PAC), conform to OAIS model, respectful of norms and standards. This platform has been accredited by the SIAF (Interdepartmental Service of the Archives of France) for intermediate archives and accepts any data type (administrative, patrimonial, scientific: from calculations or observations) in any form (text, images, sound, video …)
If backup provides current data security it does not constitute any way a guarantee of sustainability over time as the readability of the support that the ability of restitution understandable content.
Only a true archiving solution can claim to meet this challenge.
